Leftover Subway Fare To Be Donated To Charity

New York commuters in the U.S. often use the MetroCard to get around and travel on public transports. Often the card gets lost or disregarded when the amount becomes minuscule. However, all these leftover amounts on unused MetroCards can total up to $52 million each year. MetroChange hopes to take advantage of this and let users donate the ‘loose change’ on their MetroCard to charity simply by swiping it at a special kiosk.

The MetroChange was designed by students at NYU’s Interactive Communications Program. The kiosk is able to read the MetroCard to let the user know how much is left on the card. The user can then feel free to donate what’s left on the card to charity at a push of button. The students are currently looking for partners to collaborate with on this project.
