IBM Develops Electric Car Charging App

IBM Research, in partnership with Zurich electricity utility provider EKZ, is working on a mobile app that provides real-time information for consumers with electric vehicles, like battery level, range, and current energy costs.

The app, developed by IBM scientists in Zurich, works together with a data recording device created by the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, which would be installed in the electric vehicle. There it could collect information and transmit it to an IBM cloud. This way, utility providers could also gain further insight into energy generation and consumption.

The app works on most smartphones, tablets and web browsers, and provides an integration point between the vehicle, the utility provider and the driver. The four-button interface displays the vehicle’s battery level, range of travel distance, vehicle location, charge schedule and current energy costs in real-time.
