Conduct A Floating Orchestra With Your iPhone

A new iPhone application allows users to simulate the experience of being an orchestra conductor by controlling floating ping pong-like balls. The Floating Orchestra app works alongside a contraption where 19 spheres are levitated using the touch screen on an iPhone. Each sphere corresponds to a specific instrument, and every time a specific ball rises, there is also an increase in volume of the instrument.

The app and the music device is developed by Poietic Studio, a London-based company that specializes in ‘interactive and spatial design, art and engineering.’ The Floating Orchestra demonstrate the interaction of digital technology with the physical world. As a future enhancement, Poietic Studio plans to make the spheres move through motion detection technology, rather than having to use the controls on the iPhone.

Watch the video below to see how the Floating Orchestra works.
