Ford Working On OpenXC Platform That Will Let You Hack Your Car

Ford and Bug Labs have announced that they are creating an open-source in-car research and development platform called OpenXC. The platform, which is based on Bug Labs’ own open-source Bug System will enable users to hack and modify Ford’s dashboard console to improve your driving experience.

OpenXC transforms the car into a plug-and-play platform with interchangeable open-source hardware and software modules. Drivers can implement countless add-ons such as new visual and audio feedback interfaces, environmental sensors and safety devices by simply snapping Bug Labs’ hardware modules directly into Ford vehicles. K. Venkatesh Prasad, senior technical leader at Ford Research and Innovation, said:

OpenXC is about creating a platform that is totally accessible to the developer community and quickly incorporates local market needs to offer innovative solutions at an affordable price point. The platform is designed to help us answer the question of how Ford can accelerate the car connectivity experience around the globe, at a value proposition, for both mature and emerging markets.

Ford and Bug Labs plan to release the SDK (software development kit) for OpenXC later this year.
